Airbag Vests

Back in the early days of motorcycle riding a leather jacket and a cool pair of boots was the only protection a rider needed but after so many injuries, brain damage and multiple broken bones there had to be safety gear created that was fashionable and functional. The new creation is the Airbag Jacket.

How Does an Airbag Jacket Work?

Inside the vest or jacket is an airbag insert, which is placed between the inner and outer lining of the jacket. There are several tubular shaped chambers, 2 in the front and 2 running up the back of the vest. There is a compressed CO2 cylinder that inflates the tubing. There is a triggering device that pierces the CO2 cylinder upon impact. The trigger is attached to a 2mm plastic covered cable, with a safety clasp on one end and a break away device on the other. The clasp is then attached to the motorcycle.

Cost and Benefits

The airbag jacket or vest cost anywhere from about $350 to $500 and up. It offers several benefits: it enables the rider to be seen from far distances, it is equipped to accommodate bike riders, horseback riders and motorcycle riders. The jacket reduces the risk of serious injury at high impacts. It instantly inflates upon impact; the armor of protection protects the spine, chest, kidneys and other parts of the upper body. It is waterproof and breathable. The jackets come in leather, mesh and polyester.

Conclusion

There are some that believe that a thick leather jacket and some boots are all they need for protection; well there are not that many options to safety. An airbag jacket has already proven through rider testimonials that it works. A helmet, an airbag jacket and boots should be the norm for any rider that wants to come out of an accident with just minor scrapes and bruises.
