Check out this video demonstrating the Spidi Neck DPS Airbag Vest. Naturally this is a marketing video, since it is published by Spidi, but it gives a pretty good overview of how airbag vests work in general, since most major models work in roughly the same way, so it's worth watching. The video is also a bit focused on the racing crowd, but it's equally applicable to street riders.
Note this airbag vest is designed to be worn over your existing jacket or armor. One of the primary criticisms of some of the airbag motorcycle jackets out there is they don't offer the best abrasion resistance, so if you're concerned about that, a vest like this one might be a good alternative to an integrated jacket. It's also very lightweight, coming in at just over 1 pound.
Interesting. I might actually consider one of these if I can wear it over my beloved leathers.
