Although airbags in the motorcycle world aren't necessarily a new safety concept, motorcycle safety has become an ever-growing industry that has begun to experiment with meshing safety with style. While a few models of motorcycle, such as the Honda Goldwing, include car-style airbags, it's much more common for motorcycle airbags to come in the form of a jacket the rider wears which attaches to the bike using a rip cord. The jackets are composed of a CO2 cylinder and an air bladder. Should the rider become ejected from the motorcycle, the CO2 cylinder will go off and fill up the air bladder inside of the jacket. There is still a fair amount of skepticism surrounding whether or not a motorcycle airbag is worth it, since the rider has to be fully ejected from the bike before they will start to inflate. Another potential drawback to the jackets is the time the bags take to inflate, as well s the fact that rather than inflating at the moment impact is detected, a motorcycle airbag inflates after the initial impact. This potentially means the rider may be airborne for some time before the airbag fills. A common misconception many people first had was that the airbag might deploy if they forgot to detach it from the bike before dismounting- luckily, it takes a lot more force than that to trigger the CO2 cylinder! Despite the few possible disadvantages, there are many people that now swear by wearing a motorcycle airbag after experiencing instances in which their airbags saved them from serious injury and steep doctor bills. Some of the features include an inflatable flap that protects the rider's tailbone, and a way to lock the head in place. Specifically, they were intended to protect the body's most vulnerable parts such as the spine, chest, and major organs. Now that manufacturers are coming out with stylish, and considerably less bulky, alternatives to the original motorcycle airbag, there's no reason not to take one on a test run!
